This art exhibition features artwork and performances created by inmates at the SD State Penitentiary and Mike Durfee State Prison during three-week residencies in 2023 and 2024 with choreographer Suzanne Costello and me, visual artist Ariadne (Ari) Albright.
The I Believe II: Arts & Incarceration tour brings these creative voices to communities across South Dakota and tribal nations—fostering reflection, dialogue, and rehabilitation. Sponsored in part by a South Dakota Arts Council Project Grant, the exhibition will visit 13 galleries and arts centers throughout South Dakota and Minnesota through 2026.
Residencies are made possible through support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the South Dakota Department of Health Innovation Grant. The program blends visual art, movement, and writing—offering participants a space for creativity, healing, and connection.
The exhibit will be on display April 16 – May 16, 2025.
